Excitement was in the air at the Turtle Bay Resort on April 6 as about 100 elementary-aged students from the Ko‘olauloa area took part in the third annual Battle of the Books organized by the Kahuku Public and School Library and volunteers from the Friends of the Library – Kahuku. Battle of the Books is a free, after school program that encourages students to read from a pre-selected, age- appropriate reading list over the school year and culminates in an interactive competition where they must correctly answer questions about the books to win prizes donated by the library and Ko‘olauloa businesses. This year’s participating schools were from Ka‘a‘awa, Hau‘ula, La‘ie, Kahuku and Sunset Beach Elementary. At the end of the night, Kahuku Elementary won Division III (grades 5-6), while La‘ie Elementary won both Division II (grades 3-4) and Division I (grades 1-2).
