Councilmember Heidi Tsuneyoshi has been working with the Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing (CEWS) and its supporters to find ways to promote equality for female surfers in competitions on the North Shore and, eventually, throughout Oahu. In 2017, CEWS had successfully pushed for the Titans of Mavericks surf contest to include a women’s division. Through collaboration between CEWS, its supporters and Councilmember Tsuneyoshi, Resolution 20-12, which urges the City and State to adopt new rules to ensure gender equity in surf contests on the North Shore, was adopted by the City Council on January 29th. By passing this resolution the City Council has taken the position that our local governments need to take steps toward ensuring that women have the same chances as men to make a career out of their passion for surfing. Councilmember Tsuneyoshi will continue to work with CEWS, its supporters and anyone else who advocates for this important issue.
