The 1931 Hale’iwa Theatre a beautiful lava rock building was the biggest building in Hale’iwa with a concrete face and storefronts on either side of the entrance. Tomitaro Konno, proprietor of the Hale’iwa Theatre and before that the 1923 Eiraku Theatre was restoring the outside of the entertainment center and remodeling the interior with a small theatre and
to show movies. During the 1932 flood in Waialua and Hale’iwa, Tomitaro Konno took in 23 families affected by the flooding into his Hale’iwa Theatre for refuge and safety. Most of the families were Japanese farmers.
