North Shore NewsNorth Shore Chamber of Commerce Receives Hawaiian Electric Grant for the Ka Iwa Garden at Weed Circle
Hawaiian Electric has awarded the North Shore Chamber of Commerce a grant of $3500 for the repairs and maintenance of the irrigation system at Ka Iwa Garden, which is the triangle at the entrance of Hale‘iwa. The Ka Iwa Garden has the large “Welcome to Historic Haleiwa” sign and is one of the first sights people see when entering our town.
The North Shore Chamber of Commerce sponsored and coordinated the project under the direction of Executive Director, Antya Miller from 2012 to 2015. The project was financed by a Grant In Aid from the City and County of Honolulu, Chamber member donations, and pro bono services from landscape architect Richard Brownlee, Island Mechanical Boring Company, and Boyd Ready, landscape contractor. Through an agreement with the State of Hawaii, the irrigation system is the responsibility of the North Shore Chamber of Commerce, and the State is responsible for water and mowing the grass.
“This Hawaiian Electric grant will ensure that our plants and grass stay healthy… Haleiwa deserves a beautiful and inviting entrance into town,” says Chair Mary Wood.
“Well-maintained and welcoming entry points make both visitors and residents feel comfortable, safe and connected. Paying attention to keeping public spaces clean and well-kept is cost-effective and sustainable,” says Kiersten Faulkner, Executive Director of the Historic Hawaii Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to improving and saving historic places. “Great welcome signs are a great draw for area businesses. It also shows that the community takes pride in its business district,” says Roxana Jimenez, Manager of the North Shore Chamber of Commerce.
Jeff Dorr of Dorr to Paradise Landscaping will perform the repairs on the irrigation system and Brent White of Lush Palm Landscapes will provide the maintenance. Both companies have also donated their services to Weed Circle and Chamber projects.
