O‘ahu motorists can now buy at any satellite city hall a license plate that publicly showcases their support for the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
An estimated 18,000 commemorative plates are available for purchase at satellite city halls across the City and County of Honolulu.
No appointment is needed to purchase the plates, which feature the Hōkūle‘a, the double-hulled Polynesian voyaging canoe, anchored at Kualoa on the windward side of O‘ahu, where it first sailed to Tahiti more than 46 years ago.
The initial cost of the plates is $35.50. Of that total, $20 of each purchase of the plate will go to the Polynesian Voyaging Society, which promotes Hawaiian indigenous culture through its environmentallydriven mission.
The annual renewal fee for the license plate is $25, with a significant portion of the proceeds allocated to the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
