North Shore resident, James Kazlausky, has had a community garden plot at Laulima Grades, located at Kuilima Farm, since 2019.

“I like to try everything to see what grows well,” he says. “I enjoy growing for myself, family and enjoy sharing them with friends-especially if they return a cooked meal with the vegetables from the garden.”

There are currently seven community garden plots available for North Shore organizations or community members to apply for. Each Laulima Garden plot is 10 ft. x 50 ft. (500 square feet) filled with rich Kahuku soil. A water stub is provided to the plots. All water is non-potable. Garden plots will be assigned for at least a one-year commitment. Staff members from Pono Pacific, which manages the farm and community garden, are always on site to help guide gardeners in best practices.

“Community gardeners enjoy a sense of community while growing their own food,” says Ivy Wappler, Pono Pacific Project Manager. “Gardeners are eligible to utilize communal tools and equipment, as well as have access to educational opportunities.”
