2021 OIA Girls Volleyball Champions
Kahuku High and Intermediate School volleyball program battled hard all 2021 season to earn the title of 2021 OIA girls volleyball champions. Former Kahuku All-State 2002 Player of the Year and Division I collegiate volleyball athlete, Head Coach Tuli Peters Tevaga knows a thing or two about the game as well as collegiate competition in the sport of volleyball. Coach Tuli alongside of her dedicated assistant coaches Shai Magalei, Musie Lauhingoa, and Tia Thompson selected the 2021 theme of “We are Kahuku” to lead the season with pride, determination, grit, and pure heart. Senior
Natali Keni credited her coaches that “pushed us and my teammates” the coaches and teammates “were so supportive of each other.” Senior co- captains Emmalei Mapu and Shace Niu not only were fierce athletes on the court but they are honor roll scholars. Co-Captain, Player of the Year OIA Eastern Division, and HHSAA Division I All Tournament Team Emmalei Mapu in addition to watching film, waking up early to attend seminary, and rehab after every practice she has “been in my school’s SBG throughout my whole high school career and also been an honor roll student as well.” She believes “with these things, it has helped me to learn and fill leadership roles, volunteer to help those around me & also be available to represent myself, my name, and my community everywhere I go in a good way.” Mapu is committed to Western Nebraska. The Lady Raiders echo the same commitment to cultivating close relationships with each other that helped in clutch times. Junior setter, Bella Akanoa worked hard to give her teammates the right sets and hittable balls. Akanoa never competed at this level before “it is different competition from my Jammers Volleyball Club” she gained confidence and maintained a positive attitude. The Lady Raiders are fortunate to have senior student-athletes to example the “We are Kahuku” through intensive practices and mental focus which Keni shares, “volleyball is 1% skill and 99% heart and mindset.” Seniors Makayla Vaomu, Amia Silva, Anastaysha Mioi, Emmalei Mapu, Natali Keni, and Shace Niu led their team with pride and pure heart.
